Case Study Upgrading a 17yo C-Bus System

This video show the simple process of CMM working with the client’s electrician to upgrade a 17 year old C-Bus home automation system. Whilst the C-Bus system had been working reliably for this time, the wear and tear on the switches was evident. The equipment was also reaching end of life. We took the opportunity to be on the front foot and replace all of the ageing C-Bus equipment before a major failure happened.

Common Misconceptions Of What C-Bus Can And Can’t Do

C-Bus Vs New Wireless Light Switches?

C-Bus lighting systems are more reliable, last longer and will work in all types of houses. Wireless solutions, whilst convenient, can suffer latency (up to a 1-2 sec delay after pressing the button) and are impacted by external forces like other wireless devices in the home. In addition, wireless solutions require quality wireless coverage throughout entire the home. Larger homes, homes built with concrete, steel frames or re-enforced block walls often have inadequate wireless coverage. Therefore wireless switches may work one day but not reliably the next. C-Bus has wired switches, meaning that it does not rely on a wireless signal – the switch will work every time you press it. Hard-wired systems are always the preferred choice.

Isn’t C-Bus Is An Old Technology?

C-Bus has been around for 25 years. It is an old technology, but just like the wheel, it’s reliable and effective. If all your clients want to do is dim lights, turn them on/off, control a fan or a group of motorised blinds, then C-Bus has been able to do this reliably for decades. We don’t need to re-invent the wheel. C-Bus can be enhanced by third-party control systems that use smartphones and tablets. Your client can integrate other systems like music, TV, security, CCTV, intercoms, and air-con / climate control. 20 year old C-Bus systems still work very well well with modern control systems like Control4, RTi or Savant.

C-Bus Is Expensive?

It doesn’t have to be super expensive! For your typical four-bedroom home, which needs a few lights, blinds, and fans. The cost difference between wireless products and C-Bus solutions is not that significant, particulary when you add reliability concerns of wireless technology. It depends on the size and complexity of the project. For large projects with hundreds of circuits across many devices, we recommend setting time aside for design and planning before installation and testing.

Can I Add Cameras To Existing C-Bus Homes?

We only use C-Bus for Lights, Blinds and Fans. Expanding the smart home system with CCTV cameras, Security, Music and Intercoms can all be done by adding a control system to C-Bus, like Savant or Control4. This can be controlled from down the street or from on holiday anywhere in the world. Any upgrade project is scalable. It can be as simple as replacing a few switches to building a new system from scratch. C-Bus is still a great choice for lighting control for any size upgrade.

I Want Everything To Work On My Phone.

Ten or fi fteen year old C-Bus systems can easily be updated without changing existing C-Bus hardware like dimmers, relays and switches. Today’s automation systems, like Control4, Crestron, Savant and RTi use a smart phone app to control everything in the home. These work really well with existing and older C-Bus systems. It doesn’t have to be a huge job to upgrade to a fully functional and modern system.

It Is All Too Complicated?

For the client, it should be a seamless experience. It requires little training to use the C-Bus system if programmed correctly. It works every time. As a technology partner, we take on this responsibility. We make sure that everything is installed and programmed in a way that exceeds the clients expectations.
